"man" means ten thousand . "yo" means leaves . "shu" means collection . Manyoshu is the oldest Japanese collection of poems. It was completed in about 770 AD. It is the collection of 4500 poems from about 630 AD to about 760 AD. Who collected these poems remains a mystery.
